In the book, The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle; he discusses the fact that all worry and stress come from two possible things….
1) Worrying too much about the past.
He argues that there is no point in worrying about the past, especially to the point where it causes anxiety and stress. Sure it’s great to learn from the past, but dwelling on it, doesn’t do you any good. The reason why, is that you can not change the past. You can only learn from it. So learn from the mistakes you’ve made and move on, don’t let it hang you up with stress.
2) Worrying too much about the future.
He argues that it’s important to think about the future but worrying too much about something that hasn’t happened yet, or worrying too much about something that could possibly happen isn’t a worthwhile venture. The future has not happened yet, so letting it ruin your state, and causing huge anxiety doesn’t do you any good.
What Tolle would argue is that you only have the NOW. You can only control what you are doing right now at this very instant. What you are doing now will affect your future and should be shaped by your past, but stress should only be present on your current situation.
If your current situation isn’t setting your future up for success change it. If your current situation isn’t taking advantage of the knowledge from the past change it. All we have is right now, and that now is constantly shifting into the past.
So what are you doing right now that can take advantage of your past experiences and set your future up for success? If you’re not doing something now that is worthwhile, what are you going to do to change it?
