10-25-16… What is Failure…

Failure is what happens when you decide you failed.

It’s all about your #perspective right?

When a baby first learns how to walk, they take a few steps and fall down.  Did they fail?  No certainly not.  Why?  Because they didn’t decide they failed.  They decided that it was a learning experience and that they needed to try again.

At one time, Steve Jobs was booted from Apple.  He founded the company, created it, grew it to a billion dollar company, hired a CEO, and then got pushed out by the board of directors.  Did he chalk that up as a failure and quit life?

No.  He started Next and PIXAR.  He learned from his mistakes, and began working on the next project which also happened to be named Next.  Then what happened?  Apple bought Next and Steve Jobs was back at Apple.  Then through a turn of events, he ended up back at the helm of Apple, where he canned most of Apple’s products, came up with revolutionary ideas such as the iPod, Iphone, Ipad, etc. and literally changed the world.

I’m no Steve Jobs, but by anybody’s definition, I could’ve been seen as a failure.  I flunked my freshman year of college.  I had a 1.5 GPA.  I was pushed out of the medical school track, and had to change majors 5 times before I landed on what I eventually got my degree in, Sports Medicine.  Then I tried to work in the NFL, got snubbed by all 32 teams.  Tried to get a job in a college, applied to 115 different positions…. I got 3 interviews and no collegiate jobs.  I took a job in a clinic here in Memphis, and I knew when I took the job, my career in collegiate or professional sports was over, but I took the job because it was the ‘right’ thing to do.

Then I was so unhappy I followed my passion and started a business.  I’ve had numerous ‘failures’ within that business.  ‘Failures’ in leadership, ‘failures’ with customers, ‘failures’ in running a business, you name it I’ve done it.  I’m not perfect, and I’ve ‘failed’ a ton….

BUT, I don’t consider myself a failure.  I continually work on my personal growth, and the growth of everything I’m doing and everyone around me.  I see what I can learn and I keep moving forward.

You see we only fail when we decide we failed.  So you have two options when faced with the decision.  Decide that you failed and that you’re a failure at that endeavor.

Or decide what you can learn from the event.  Decide how you can grow, and then move on to the next big thing.
