Lately Krystal has been running our staff through some goal setting. It coincides quite nicely to me personally since I’ve been working on this myself.
This isn’t just run of the mill goals, ‘I want to lose weight,’ or ‘I want to be a better person.’ These goals are about defining and actually being deliberate about wanting to achieve them.
One of our focuses has been on different types of goals. I believe it’s important to focus on a few different areas and set goals in each. Here is what we are working on…
Work or more specifically for us our role in the business. This can also classify for you as a wealth goal.
Health
Relationships
Skill/ hobbies
If you do not set goals in each one of these areas, you will not progress in those areas.
For wealth, or occupation. It’s important to define what you want to accomplish there. If you want to make $80,000 by next year, what are YOU going to do to accomplish this? Standing around wishing it will happen will not make it happen. The lottery is not a good retirement plan, so define what you want to make and figure out how to do it.
For health, where do you want to be in a year? Down 50lbs, maybe 100lbs? Those are attainable in a year with focus. Define what you want and then go after it.
Relationships; what do you want to accomplish here? Better relationship with your spouse? Spicier night life? More connection? Better relationship with your kids? Define it.
Skills/ hobbies; what is something you’ve always wanted to do that will take deliberate practice to make you better? Play guitar or piano? Learn to speak Spanish?
We typically pick one thing that will be our goal this year and we do this on New Year’s. Here’s my resolution, and then by March we have fallen off. It’s not because we are bad people, or lazy, it’s due to a lack of a plan.
IF you want to accomplish something you have to do what’s called reverse engineering. Here are the steps to accomplishing your goals:
1) Define exactly what it is you want to accomplish.
Here are some examples: Increase your income by $12,000, Lose 50lbs, Create more intimacy in your marriage, Learn to play piano.
2) Be specific on those goals.
In the examples above the last two are kind of vague. How do you know when those are accomplished? I like to outline a definition of done. Example, increasing my income by $12,000 did it happen or not? Lose 50lbs, did it happen or not. Create more intimacy in your marriage how can that be defined? Maybe every week evaluate ask your partner on a scale of 1-5 how would you rank our intimacy? Then you answer the same way. Define an average score that you want to accomplish and aim for that. For learning to play the piano, define what you want to be able to play. Example; I want to be able to play Moonlight Sonata and Fur Elise by Beethoven by memory by the end of this year.
3) Give a specific timeline
In our example one year is the time line, but you can make it a longer term goal. I’m working on a 7 year personal financial goal currently.
4) Write the goal down and post it.
I would also recommend that you write the goal down in the morning and in the evening every day. In the morning ask yourself what can I do today to accomplish this goal. In the evening ask yourself what did I do today to accomplish this goal? What can I do tomorrow to set me up for success.
Example: By December of 2019 I will be 50lbs lighter.
5) Tell someone else that can hold you accountable
By telling someone else it will make it real.
6) Define habits that will lead to the accomplishment of that goal.
For weight loss for example: I will workout 300 days this year. I will eat clean 5 days a week. I will cook 5 days a week. All of the habits and behaviors should be trackable.
7) Now reverse engineer the habits from the end goal.
For this income goal of $12,000 extra income you can divide it up. You’ll need to make an extra $1,000 a month or you can increase it. Month 1: $250, Month 2: $500 etc until you hit your goal. This will let you know if you’re on track. Then reverse engineer the habits to hit that goal. For example, what can I do for work that can increase my income by $250 this month. Etc.
8) Lastly, evaluate your progress.
I would do this daily, weekly, and monthly to make sure you’re staying on track. By making goal evaluation a habit, you’ll be much more likely to succeed.
I hope this was helpful for you. Rather than waiting until New Year’s to make your goals. Start thinking about them now. What can you do today, right now, this very moment to move you towards your goals. Follow these steps and you will be successful.
