4-26-18… Which Is Worse?

I recently read a blog by Seth Godin and I thought it would be awesome to share it with you guys.  You can check out the original author and his blog here.

Which is worse…

Failure or fear of failure?

Fear or fear of fear?

Trying and failing or not trying at all?

Speaking up and not being heard, or suffering in silence?

Caring and losing, or not caring at all?

Doing or wondering?

– Seth Godin

When I read this I thought it was so relevant to many of us at the gym.  Many many of you didn’t start a fitness routine for a long time because of fear.  Many of us don’t do certain moves well not because we lack the skill to do them but because we have fear of the movement. Heck who among you have not skipped a workout because in reality you were afraid of the struggle you’d go through in the workout.

It’s my opinion that fear is a huge driver in human beings, and sometimes it causes paralysis.  What if instead of constantly being afraid of the outcome we just went for it?  One of the things you can do here is what I like to call the worst case scenario exercise.  Take any action that you’re afraid of and write down what the absolute worst case scenario would be of that action. For example: Starting an exercise program.  The worst case scenario there could be that you participate and not get results. Well that’s not so bad is it?  You aren’t any worse off then you were before the program.  Another worst case scenario…. you could get hurt.  This scenario is highly unlikely.  In fact if you look at statistics based off of number of exposures, you have a greater chance of dying in a car accident on the way to the gym rather then getting injured while you’re at the gym.  Especially with a program like ours where a coach is watching you all the time.  Sometimes things happen but it is rare.

You can do this worst case scenario exercise with any aspect of life.  Usually the worst case sounds kind of silly once you put it on paper.  Most of the time our fear of what could happen hinders what actually happens.  Usually the outcome is much better then we expect and in the end you’re a better person for it.

The next time you’re looking at starting something new, I’d like for you to remember the writing of Seth Godin here and then go for it.
