‘Comparison is the thief of joy’
– Stacey London
I heard this quote the other day in an interview with her, and it really struck me. She is so right. We spend way too much time focusing on how we compare to others and we never take time to celebrate what we’ve actually done or what we have going on.
One of the great things about CrossFit is working next to someone else, it can motivate you to do better and to be better, and it can be inspirational. It can also be detrimental if the wrong things are focused on. It’s really all about your perspective. If you spend time comparing yourself to someone else and wondering why you can’t, or you only did this, or you didn’t do great because that person did so much better, that’s a problem. If you spend your time celebrating in others victories, truly excited that they did their best, and celebrating you doing your best, then it can be an amazing experience.
Use comparison to motivate you, but don’t use it to discourage you. Don’t let comparison in any aspect steal your joy.
