Many of us get overwhelmed. I do too. Especially when it comes to our fitness. We look at people who are far ahead of where we are at, or we look at people who have been training for years and become overwhelmed. We look at where we want to go and become overwhelmed with the enormous task we have in front of us to reach that goal.
There’s always a gap from where we are and where we want to go. The key is to mind the gap. We have to manage the gap and figure out how to navigate it.
This happens in many areas of life. For example, just the other day a good friend of mine and I were having a conversation about taxes. It turns out she filed an extension but still hadn’t done her taxes yet. It’s July 25th, and they were supposed to be done in April. Why weren’t they done? It’s overwhelming. After much discussion we boiled it down to this person didn’t know what they needed to have ready for the accountant, so the task was avoided.
When we looked at it objectively, we had to figure out what was the next step. What is the next action in order to move towards the completed task. It turns out the next action for her was to call the CPA and ask what was needed. At that point, it was an easy action. So it was completed. Now there is a list of paperwork that needs to be gathered and the next step is to gather it. Easy. Then the next step is to drop off the paperwork. After that, it’s up to the CPA.
In fitness, we have the same issues. We look at the huge gap and become overwhelmed with what to do. What’s the next logical step?
Show up. Ok, easy, drive to the gym. Once that happens, what’s the next step? Keep showing up. Ok got it, check. What’s the next step? You probably should look at nutrition. Ok that’s overwhelming, what would be the first step on that front? Well maybe check out the videos I was sent. Read through the down load that was sent to me. Plan to follow the 6 week transition. Follow the swaps that are there, and so on.
You see, if you look at the gap with manageable, logical steps, it becomes much easier to execute.
What’s your next step to get you where you want to go? What is your next action to overcome the overwhelming feeling?
