7-31-18… Today I Updated My Life Insurance….

My dad died a couple of days ago.  It still doesn’t seem real saying it.  I keep telling people we weren’t close, he didn’t raise me, as if somehow telling myself that it’s ok and doesn’t matter that he’s gone.  In reality it still hurts.  I still feel this deep sense of loss.  I guess it’s a culmination of several different factors that makes it rough, and I’ll go into those in another post.

Today I updated my life insurance because I realized I don’t have all my stuff together.  I’ve had policies but they aren’t updated to where they need to be. I don’t have a will. I don’t have a succession plan in place for the business. We go through life thinking that we are invincible, that nothing will happen to us, but things do happen, life is very fragile and at any moment you could be gone.  Today was supposed to be my dad’s 56th birthday.

One of the things that bothers me the most about my dad’s death is the fact that it was 100% preventable.  I mean, death is inevitable, but the way he died or at least what we think happened was preventable. It was from Type 2 Diabetes.  You see, he thought he was invincible too.  He ate unhealthy all the time, and even after being diagnosed did a terrible job keeping his blood sugar in check.  Diabetes is a serious, serious illness and we take it all too lightly in today’s society because it is highly prevalent.  In April, dad was posting on Facebook about his blood sugar being over 500.  This is a serious issue.  They let him out of the hospital with a blood sugar of 224.  Even a few days later it was still 190.  The heartbreaking thing about this is the fact that I help people reverse diabetes all the time, it’s just part of what we do on a daily basis.  So I tried to help him some, but it was in one ear out the other.

People, I’m not trying to lecture you here, but know that if you are borderline Type 2 diabetic, or diagnosed Type 2 diabetic this is a serious issue and it needs to be addressed.  There are things you can do.  Nutrition and exercise can help dramatically.  If you’re not too far gone many if not all symptoms can be reversed.  This is a completely curable and preventable disease.  If you have it please reach out to someone who can help you.  If you are borderline please do what you need to do fix the issue.

Here are some things that can help with blood sugar.  This is not an exhaustive list, and it’s meant to be a quick and dirty on some things that can help. Always consult your doctor.

1) Eat meats and vegetables

Eat 3 meals a day and make them mostly meats and vegetables based.

2) Avoid starchy carbohydrates

This can include potatoes, breads, pastas, cookies, rice, anything with sugar.

3) Fasting can help.

Consult your doctor before you try any fasting on your own, but as long as your blood sugar doesn’t drop too crazy, fasting for up to 19 hours a day has proven to be highly effective in helping with insulin sensitivity and lowering blood sugar.

4) Exercise

High intensity exercise is the best type of exercise to help with blood sugar, followed by weight lifting, and lastly traditional cardio.  Even walking can help, so start where you feel comfortable and progress from there.

5) Check your blood sugar often

If you have blood sugar issues, it’s important to check regularly and adjust accordingly, but if you follow the first 4 steps here, your blood sugar issues should decrease dramatically.

Please, please, please take care of yourself before it’s too late.  You’re not invincible and people die from this all the time.  If you need help, I’d be happy to help you.
