8-11-21… It’s Too Late?

We had a woman in our program once who came to me elated with some good news.  Her doctor had told her that she was one of the fittest 51 year olds she has ever seen.  Of course that’s a fantastic compliment, any one of us would be excited to hear that from a doctor.  If you had known where she came from you would be astounded.  When she started she had MS (multiple sclerosis).  This can be a debilitating disease.  She had to park in a handicapped spot, and walk with a cane.  She also had season tickets to the Grizzlies but never went because she couldn’t make it up the stairs easily.  She smoked, drank and most importantly had resigned herself to the idea that this was as good as it was going to get and she needed to live it up because it was only going to get worse.

Something changed……

She made a choice to do better.  I’m not writing this to toot our own horn, although it certainly can be written that way.  I’m writing this to illustrate the point that it’s never too late.  She made a choice to change her lifestyle and is now reaping the rewards.  The Grizzlies just made a deep run in the playoffs and she was at every home game.  She made a choice to clean up her diet now she can run a 5K.  She made a choice to stop drinking so much, now she feels better then she has in 20 years.

We all make choices.  Most people use the excuse, ‘oh they must be genetically gifted,’ or ‘I could never do that,’ etc. etc.  The truth is you can.  You can if you choose to do so.  It’s only too late if you decide it’s too late.  If you resign yourself to mediocrity you will only ever be mediocre.
