9-13-16… Picking Cherries…

Do you look at the workouts the day before and skip because of the movements posted?

In my world we call that cherry picking. You only pick the cherries or the workouts with movements that you like doing.

I HATE handstand push ups. They’ve always been tough for me, and I hate working to failure on the wall where I spend 3 minutes of the workout just shaking my arms waiting to be able to do another repetition.

As the owner and the programmer for the gym I could easily avoid these movements for life, but instead, I make sure I do that workout.

Why?

Because CrossFit isn’t about just working on things you’re good at. CrossFit is about increasing your work capacity over broad time and modal domains. In plain English, it’s about increasing your ability and becoming better at all aspects of fitness. In order to do that you have to work on your goats.

Goats are things you aren’t good at. For me, that’s Snatch, Handstand Push Ups, Bench Press, Push Ups, Pull ups, anything grip intensive. I make it a point to do those workouts to make sure that I get that practice in.

In CrossFit, you’re going to run into movements that you’re not good at, your goats. You’ll also find movements that you’re great at aka your wheel house movements. In order to increase your overall fitness you must work on your goats. Embrace the suck of not being good at something, and keep working on it. Eventually you’ll get better and by doing so, you’ve increased your fitness.

Don’t avoid your goats, and if at all possible enjoy the process of learning a new skill. Get pushed out of your comfort zone, and by all means, DO NOT cherry pick. What’s your goats that you’d rather avoid….snatch, double unders, hand stand push ups, running?

I want to hear yours!

PS: Now that it’s written if you skip today, it’ll be assumed you cherry picked πŸ˜‰ #dontbeaslacker
