9-16-20… If the Truth Hurts..

I wrote this blog 10 years ago but the wisdom still holds true.  Of course, now I’ve been coaching people for 20 years, but who’s counting haha…..

My Grandpa, like most, is infinite in wisdom and in sayings that don’t make sense. One of my personal favorites is, ‘If you ain’t gonna use your head, you might as well have two a$*holes.’

That one never really made sense to me, but somewhere deep inside I knew he was saying I made a stupid mistake.

One saying that does make sense, and holds a lot of merit in my life is, ‘If the truth hurts, change it.’

I believe that in this saying, my Grandpa got it right.

This is one of the quotes that I live my life by, and I wanted to share it with you. I’ve been coaching people in fitness for around 10 years now. Suffice it to say, I have come in contact with at least a thousand people and discussed fitness with them. I’m also sure that in those thousands of conversations, I have probably hurt someone’s feelings unintentionally once or twice (maybe four or five times).

Many times I get the same responses:

‘I am so out of shape right now, I can’t do anything.’

‘I am embarrassed to come in there, because I’m so out of shape.’

‘I need to work on my nutrition.’

‘I need to drop a few pounds before I come to you.’

‘I’m too busy to work out right now.’

All of those responses are an out.

Nobody needs to get into shape before they come to us. We exist to get people in shape. I tell everyone that walks through our doors, ‘It doesn’t matter where you are, it only matters where you are going.’ It’s true! Ask any of our gym members, I guarantee that I have most likely said that to them at least once.

For the most part, I feel that those responses are an excuse to not change the truth. If you look in the mirror and are unhappy with what you see, then what are you waiting for

If you are unhappy with the situation that you are in change it. If you are unhappy and use one of the earlier phrases then the Truth is usually one of these statements: ‘I don’t want to work that hard to get results.’ ‘I’d rather try and find a pill, instead of take care of my health.’ ‘I’m perfectly content with being unhealthy.’

If you are a regular member, obviously you have decided to do something positive with your health. If you are one of the people with the excuses look inside yourself for the truth. If the you are pissed off from this article, then maybe the truth hurt a little bit, and like my grandfather says, ‘If the truth hurts, change it.’

What are some truths that you’ve had to change in your life?
