Greg Glassman the founder of CrossFit once said, ‘If you want to see a man run his best mile ever, put him next to someone else.’
This is one of the tremendous benefits of working in our community. You get to be around people that are also going through the same thing you’re going through. One of the things that helps me is friendly competition. Not in a jerk way like I’m better then you, but rather in a friendly, let’s push each other to go harder way.
I love love love working out in a class. I mentally pick someone in the class to try and beat or I try and beat some of the best times on the board. I don’t do this to be arrogant, but I know if I didn’t do that, I would not go as hard, and I would not reap as much benefit out of the workout.
So, I want to encourage you to pick someone to pit yourself against. It’s good and healthy and can be an awesome way to push each other.
That being said, there is a negative side that can rear it’s head. You can’t be down on yourself if someone does better then you. Comparison is a great thief of joy, so if it becomes detrimental to you, then just do your thing. We always say, you’re not competing against anybody but yourself and that is true.
But if it can be a positive experience for you, pick someone to go against, even if that someone is you. You don’t have to tell them that’s your goal, just have fun with it, and do your best. Once you’ve done that be proud of your effort!
