The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at the times of challenge and controversy.
– Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and what he stood for in the Civil Rights Struggle. While you’re going about your day today I think it’s important to view people not by their skin color but rather the fact that they are people and are deserving of love. I’ve noticed that this city has had a hard time moving to that point, and understandably so. We all know what happened in 1968. What would be amazing to me is if we could progress past the hatred and move to caring and love for one another.
We know what Dr. King was speaking of in the quote above, but I think it fits well into CrossFit and what we are trying to do at CrossFit Bartlett. We are striving every day for excellence within ourselves and within our performance, and a program like ours brings people from all walks of life together. In that one hour class we don’t look at color, we don’t look at socio economic status, we don’t look at anything other than the fact that the person standing next to us is working just as hard as I am, and if I finish first, I will push them through their struggle and if they finish first they will push me through mine. There’s something beautiful about human nature banding together within struggle and supporting one another, and that’s one of the many reasons why I love what we do so much.
I believe very strongly that through fitness we can make some significant changes in the city of Memphis. When people are working together for something greater even if it’s a one hour fitness class, something magical happens, and we begin to care more for each other. When people feel good they feel good about themselves, and it allows room for more love.
I know that we are only a small part of a corner of Memphis, but it is my goal to make a dent in this city, and my hope is that we can positively affect everyone possible. I hope that one day, we can all view each other with more love.
The world would be a better place.
