Love Your Family

As I sit here and write this, it’s Father’s Day.  My father wasn’t in the picture much growing up, and I was actually raised by my grandparents on my father’s side.

My grandfather, ‘Poppi,’ basically raised me as his son.  Although, we’ve had our ups and downs we have remained pretty close my entire life, and he and my grandmother even moved up here from Florida to be with my family and the kids.

While I’m writing this blog, I’m sitting in the hospital for my grandfather. We went to dinner Saturday night, and after I dropped him off from dinner, he had some massive abdominal pain and had to be rushed to the ER.  It turns out he’s got gall stones, and has pancreatitis.  It looks like he’ll be ok, but it’s still very scary.  Especially before we knew what was going on.  He was convinced he was dying, and I wasn’t convinced otherwise.  He’s almost 75 years old and hasn’t been in the best of health, so it was a possibility.  Even with the pain meds right now, he’s writhing in pain and can not get comfortable.  They won’t operate on him for a couple of days, so it looks like we’ll have to ride it.

The reason why I’m telling you all this is not to get sympathy from you, but whether to inspire you to take action.  The healthiest places on Earth and the oldest civilizations/ happiest civilizations on Earth all have one thing in common, and that thread is family ties and connection to other human beings.

I think we’re all striving to be connected to one another in some way, and it’s important to nurture those relationships and be close to your family.  Last night, I thought I was going to lose my grandpa, and we never would’ve gotten to take my kids fishing with him.  Some of you sit there today with broken relationships in your family.  I’m here to tell you that life is too short for hatred of someone else or carrying grudges.  If you want to live a happier, healthier life, forgive your family, spend time with them, work on loving them.  It’ll be worth it.

Love your family.
