The other day the workout had a little bit of running in it.
In CrossFit we focus on all 10 aspects of health and fitness and cardiorespiratory endurance is one of those 10 general physical skills. Running is great for developing this and completely necessary for a well rounded fitness program.
I was met with a lot of animosity and negativity from many about the running. Some of it was in just, but some of it was serious, and some people would skip the workout if there was running in it.
I heard things like, ‘I’m not a runner,’ and ‘I’m terrible at running,’ so I wasn’t going to come today. To me, that makes no sense? If you’re terrible at running, the only way to get better at it is to run. Yes it hurts a little bit mentally, but guess what…..fitness isn’t easy. If it were easy, everyone would be healthy and we wouldn’t have a career.
I want to encourage you to be very careful with the words you use, and the self talk that you tell yourself. When you tell yourself you’re terrible at running, you’re going to be right. The brain hears that talk, and will do everything to convince you that you ARE terrible at running. When you tell yourself you’re not a runner, your brain will do everything in it’s power to fulfill that story. I’m not saying you have to lie to yourself and tell yourself you are a runner. That doesn’t work well either.
What I am telling you is three things…
1) Your personal narrative will define your performance.
2) Changing that narrative to, ‘I’m going to work on this skill and do my best to get better at it, or I’m excited to make improvements in my fitness today,’ will do wonders for you.
3) If you’re not good at something you must practice it to get better. Things that push you out of your comfort zone is how we progress and grow. If you quit whenever you weren’t good at something, you would’ve never learned how to walk, or ride a bike, or multiply 9 x 9.
Struggle is critical for learning and growth. Endure it, Embrace it, and Learn to love it!
