4-12-17… Stop and Smell the Flowers…

IMG_5043

Last weekend I had the kiddos with me and we did a lot of fun things.  Sunday we spent time going to brunch, and then went to the zoo all day. During the day on three separate occasions my kids made me stop and appreciate the moment…..

On the way to brunch, we were walking down the side walk and Noah saw a yellow weed flower and a Dandelion growing in the sidewalk.  I was walking kind of fast and didn’t notice until I turned around and Noah was 4 feet behind me.  He had stopped dead in his tracks to smell the yellow flower and then blow the Dandelion.  For a second, I was annoyed.  I was in a hurry trying to get to brunch, we had a big day planned and I didn’t realize what he was doing, I just knew he was 4 feet behind me.  When I turned around to see, I noticed what he was doing and the raw innocence and beauty of the moment took over.  He pays attention to every detail and appreciated it.  He had to stop and smell the flower.  He had to blow the Dandelion.  It’s in his nature, and in that moment he made me appreciate it.

Later on that day we were at the zoo.  On two separate occasions both the kids had to stop and smell flowers that were growing.  Not only did they stop to smell them, but they required, as kids normally do, for me to also participate in the activity.  Again, me being me, hard charging, always on a mission, wanted to move on to the next animal.  After all, we HAD to get to the hippos, but the kids being the wonderful fun loving little people that they are had to stop and smell the flowers.  In that moment, they made me appreciate the beauty in it.  The innocence and love of life of children is so profound.  We get so caught up in the next thing they we never really stop to appreciate what’s going on around us.

Have you ever gotten that way in the gym?  We get so hung up on, ‘I can’t do this movement well,’ or ‘I’m not progressing the way I think I should be progressing.’  Every once in a while we need to take a moment to appreciate where we are at.  Look at how much you’ve accomplished.  Look at the people that are around you.  Look at the hard work you’re putting in.  Look at the hard work your coaches our pouring into you.  Appreciate the journey for what it is.  Sometimes we all need to just stop and smell the flowers.
