Leaky Gut

Leaky gut or intestinal permeability is something that we’ve known about for quite sometime.  For years mainstream health professionals didn’t know or talk about it.  A search for intestinal permeability now on Pubmed will return thousands of hits.  It’s being studied more and more and is finally becoming recognized as a problem for people.  Of course we are a long way from people making behavior changes to curb it, but these things take time.

The research has shown now, that a molecule called Zonulin is a main source of causing Leaky Gut Syndrome. Gliadin is an extremely common source of Zonlulin which is found in gluten containing foods like wheat, rye, barley etc.  We’ve been teaching this for years, but finally the research is catching up.  Elevated Zonlulin levels are also associated with the following:

1. Crohn’s Disease

2. Type 1 Diabetes

3. Multiple Sclerosis

4. Asthma

5. Glioma

6. Inflammatory Bowel Disease

They have also drawn a link with all auto-immune diseases.  According to Dr. Alessio Fassano, one of the foremost researchers on intestinal permeability, every person with an auto immune disease has evidence of Leaky Gut.  This is extremely profound and needs to be considered in the prevention of disease.

If you are interested, here is a link to a great article talking about some of the research I mentioned.

To summarize, foods with Zonulin, namely Gluten containing foods, should be avoided.  This includes most grains.  Good luck telling that to your friends!
