Pruning

Recently I read the book Necessary Endings by Dr. Henry Cloud .  It was a fantastic book and I found many applications to my life.  I highly recommend it.  His major point in the book is that growth can not happen without ending something somewhere else.  Just think about that for a minute…. in order for me to progress in my fitness, I have to dedicate time to that.  In order to dedicate time to that, I have to make an ending with something else.  (TV perhaps? Maybe bad nutrition?)

Dr. Cloud?s key metaphor comes from the world of gardening. A healthy, vibrant, blooming rosebush is beautiful, but does not come into being without immense effort. The key to a healthy rosebush: pruning.

Pruning is a process of proactive endings. It turns out that a rosebush, like many other plants, cannot reach its full potential without a systematic process of pruning. The gardener intentionally and purposefully cuts off branches and buds that fall into any of three categories:

1. Healthy buds or branches that are not the best ones,

2. Sick branches that are not going to get well, and

3. Dead branches that are taking up space needed for the healthy ones to thrive. (Page 15)

If you are intentional about your priorities, you should be able to choose where pruning should occur.  Make the necessary endings or cuts and prune the un-nessary things in your life.  This will allow for more positive growth.  Where should pruning occur in your life?  What ending in your life has become necessary?  Sometimes choosing is very difficult, are you up for the task?
