Tech-a-holic….

Hi,

My name is Justin and I’m a tech-a-holic.  What do I mean by that?  I mean I think I’m literally addicted to my phone, or more precisely the information it brings to my finger tips.  I check it constantly.  I probably check my email 250 times a day.  I scroll through Facebook posts all the time, waiting in line at restaurant, at a red light, on the potty (TMI right?  and yes I have a 3 and 2 year old, I said potty).  The point is, it’s  a problem.  I didn’t think it was a problem.  I thought I had a handle on it.  I thought I am just trying to be productive until the other day…..

I was helping get my 3 year old daughter ready for bed, and in the transition from brushing her teeth to brushing her hair, I was checking my email.  To me it was a natural thing.  I wasn’t expecting anything.  It was 7 PM at night for goodness sake.  It was a subconscious habit, and I didn’t even realize it until my daughter called me on it.

‘Why you checking yo phone daddy? You checking yo email?’  In a flash of 3 seconds I felt a rush of emotions….

Embarrassment, realization, epiphany, and most of all remorse and disgust with myself.  I was wasting a time when I should’ve been totally connected with my family, and instead was trying to connect somehow with the outside world.  Like my family isn’t good enough or something.  Of course that’s not the case, but that’s how I felt.  All of a sudden I felt as if I was cheating on my family.  I don’t know what cheating on my spouse feels like, but I would imagine remorse and disgust with oneself are top of the list.  All of that went through my head in about 3 seconds, and my response was….

‘I don’t know why I was checking my phone.’  It was the truth.  Then I put it away for the rest of the night with them.  Apparently, I’m addicted, or at least I feel that way.  It’s time to redo my priorities.  God, Family, Others, Self…….. phone.

Are you a tech-a-holic?
