Treat Yourself Like A Child Sometimes….

Any parents out there?  As the father of a 4 year old and a soon to be in August 3 year old.  I’m constantly in parent mode….

You know what I’m talking about….

Correcting behaviors that we don’t want to see, rewarding behaviors that we do want to see, dealing with crises that aren’t really crises, the list goes on an on.

When parenting we spend much of our time figuring out how to get the kids to do what they are supposed to do and what we want them to do.  Most of the time we get much better results by rewarding good behavior and removing the temptation to do bad behavior.

I actually came up with the idea of this post talking to the elephant trainer at the zoo this weekend which consequently is how they train elephants as well (rewarding good behaviors) but I digress.

What’s your point Justin?  My point is that we all screw up.  We all do behaviors that don’t necessarily support our health and fitness goals.  We also all create crises that aren’t really crises.

Many of you are progressing towards your fitness and sometimes you slip, instead of flogging yourself about what a horrible person you are, reward yourself for doing good behaviors.

For example, if you eat healthy for 6 days out of the week and train 3-4 times a week, it’s cool to go out Saturday and have some ice cream.  Give yourself a reward for doing what you’re supposed to do.  If these are spaced out 1-2 x a week it won’t negatively impact you too much and can for all intensive and mental purposes help you do better throughout the week.

If you fall off the wagon though, don’t beat yourself up about it, just reset your goal and timeline and reward system and you’ll be much better off.

I eat ice cream every Saturday…. it’s my wife’s and my thing.  I don’t feel bad about it.  I look forward to it, and afterwards I go about my way… back on the wagon.  I’m interested to see what your rewards are?

Post your thoughts below and let me know what you think!
